Before you can become a VTC driver, there's an essential first step: the theory test, also known as eligibility test.
Organised by Chambers of Trades and Crafts (CMA), The aim of this national test is to ensure that future drivers have the knowledge they need to carry out their activities in compliance with the law, road safety and company management rules.
This is the first of the two VTC tests (before the practical test). Passing this test is a prerequisite for obtaining the professional licence required to practise the profession.

General structure of the VTC theory test
The VTC theory test is a national written test, organised throughout the year by the regional CMAs.
- Total duration : 3 hours and 50 minutes
- Format: MCQs and QRCs
- Number of questions : around 100 in total (the exact number may vary depending on the session)
- Objective: assess the regulatory, commercial, linguistic and management skills required for the profession
- Registration fee : With the statutory annual revaluation, the price of registration for the full test will rise to €241 for 2026. The cost of professional mobility (Taxi to VTC or VTC to Taxi) is €168. Re-registration for the admission test alone costs €118. The SMS option costs €2.50.
The seven subjects on the programme
The test consists of seven subjects. Five of these are common to the taxi exam, while two are specific to the VTC profession.
The duration, coefficients and eliminatory marks are set by ministerial decree.
The exact number of questions may vary slightly from one session to the next, but the durations and coefficients remain constant.
1. Regulation of T3P and prevention of discrimination and sexual and gender-based violence
- Approximately 10 MCQs and 5 MCQs
- Duration: 45 minutes
- Coefficient : 3
- Eliminatory mark : < 6/20
Contents: legal framework for private passenger transport (T3P), drivers' obligations, prevention of discrimination, issues relating to the criminal code and raising awareness of inappropriate behaviour (legal classification of harassment and assault, protective reflexes, emergency numbers, etc.).
To remember: it is a purely regulatory subject, requiring rigorous learning of the texts and definitions.
2. Management
- Approximately 16 MCQs and 2 MCQs
- Duration: 45 minutes
- Coefficient : 2
- Eliminatory mark : < 6/20
Contents: business management, basic accounting, taxation, profitability and VAT calculations.
To remember: it's one of the most technical of all materials. A non-programmable calculator is authorised and often essential.
3. Road safety
- Approximately 20 MCQs
- Duration: 30 minutes
- Coefficient : 3
- Eliminatory mark : < 6/20
Contents: Highway code, road signs, safety distances, preventive behaviour.
To remember: some questions concern rare signs or situations specific to professional driving.
4. French
- Approximately 7 MCQs and 3 MCQs
- Duration: 30 minutes
- Coefficient : 2
- Eliminatory mark : < 6/20
Contents: reading comprehension and written expression.
To remember: it's not about grammar, it's about’analysis and synthesis. The typical exercise is an explanation of a text.
5. English
- Approximately 20 MCQs
- Duration: 30 minutes
- Coefficient : 1
- Eliminatory mark : < 4/20
Contents: common vocabulary, polite expressions, understanding simple sentences.
To remember: expected level equivalent to that of a secondary school pupil. The aim is to test your ability to understand and welcome an English-speaking customer.
6. Business development
- Approximately 12 MCQs and 4 MCQs
- Duration: 30 minutes
- Coefficient : 3
- Eliminatory mark : < 6/20
Contents: customer relations, prospecting, building customer loyalty, professional communication.
To remember: This subject assesses customer service and management skills.
7. National regulations specific to VTC activities
- Approximately 6 MCQs and 2 MCQs
- Duration: 20 min
- Coefficient : 3
- Eliminatory mark : < 6/20
Contents: rules specific to VTCs: registration, professional card, operating conditions.
To remember: This subject requires an excellent knowledge of the legal and administrative framework specific to the profession.
Scale and conditions for success
Eligibility is based on two cumulative criteria:
- Overall weighted average ≥ 10/20
(the coefficients for each subject are taken into account) - No eliminatory marks
- General threshold: 6/20 minimum
- Exception for English: minimum 4/20
Grading of MCQs
Each question can have several correct answers.
Points are only awarded if all the correct answers are ticked and no wrong answers.
There is no no half points, which requires absolute precision.
Example: if the correct answers are A and C, ticking only A or ticking A, B and C gives 0 points.
Exam registration
Procedure
Since 4 November 2025, the 👉 www.examenT3P.fr is the definitive replacement for the old platform. It manages the entire candidate life cycle: registration, submission of documents, payment and consultation of results.
Documents to be provided
For French or European nationals:
- Valid identity document
- B driving licence (probationary period over)
- Proof of address less than 3 months old
- Recent passport photo
- Digital signature on white background
For non-EU nationals :
- Valid residence permit authorising professional activity
- The same documents as above (licence, proof, photo, signature)
Ineligibility criteria
- Licence still on probation
- Permanent withdrawal of a professional card in the last 10 years
- Exclusion for cheating on a T3P exam in the last 5 years
Sequence of events
Practical organisation
Examination sessions are held on the premises of CMAs or approved centres. Candidates are invited by e-mail and must bring their invitation and a valid identity document with them (strict control at the entrance).
The days of sealed envelopes are over: the test is now entirely paperless. Each candidate is given a secure touch-sensitive tablet.
Authorised equipment is restricted
- The tablet provided by the centre.
- A non-programmable calculator (for the management test).
- A pen and draft paper (provided on site) for your calculations. Connected watches, headphones and mobile phones are strictly forbidden and must be switched off.
Exam interface (Evalbox)
There's no more optical grid to fill in. Answers are selected directly on the touch screen using the Evalbox application.
- Subjects are generated randomly for each candidate.
- A stopwatch built into the tablet indicates the time remaining for each module.
- Be careful with MCQs: an answer is only valid if all the correct options are ticked (no half points).
Fighting fraud
Surveillance is reinforced by the digital system. Any attempt at fraud (use of personal electronic devices, communication, forbidden documents) will result in severe penalties:
- Immediate exclusion from the session.
- Ban on re-registering for any T3P (Taxi/VTC) exam for 5 years.
- File forwarded to the CMA for administrative penalties.
Results and next steps
Publication of results
- Average time : 3 to 4 weeks after the event
- Consultation : on the CMA website and in the candidate area
- Notification : by email
Successful candidates receive a certificate of eligibility, valid 1 year.

Validity and number of attempts
During the year :
- Candidates may apply up to three times to the practical test.
- After three unsuccessful attempts, he retake the theory test to renew your eligibility.
In the event of failure
Unsuccessful candidates receive a detailed transcript of records by e-mail.
To retake the exam, you must re-register and pay the registration fee again.

The VTC theory test is not a simple knowledge test, but a comprehensive assessment of the future professional.
It combines regulation, management, safety and a sense of service.
